The Real Story Behind Goth Fashion
By | July 27, 2010
Tell someone that you like to dress in all-black, and they might suspect you’re a Goth. However, while black is the staple of Goth fashion, it takes more than that to dress like a Goth. While fashion isn’t what the Goth subculture is all about, the way you dress tells everyone else how you see yourself.
The purpose of Goth dress style is to express your own individuality. Now, while black is a good default, many Goths add other colors to their outfits such as grey or white.
As a matter of fact, we’re starting to see downright rich colors in Goth outfits: Hot pink, deep red, sapphire blue. But still, one thing remains consistent: Black is the primary color.
Accessorizing is very important to dressing in the Goth style. Lots of jewelry, and often piercings, are a hallmark of the style. Silver or pewter jewelry is common, usually in dramatic or chunky styles.
What’s also popular are religious symbols, which are frequently worn as pendants. It’s an important part of one’s identity. You’ll often see a lot of gloves and sleeves (arm warmers). Patterned tights are common. Tights that are striped or fishnet are another way to inject color into Goth fashion.
It’s very easy to find clothes that will help you dress in a Goth style. Try starting at your local thrift store. You can find lots of stuff there for cheap that you can alter!cut it, dye it, or add studs to make it truly yours.
Of course, because there are more people than ever interested in Goth now, many stores cater to this and have lines of clothing available that will suit as well. Make the outfit your own with accessories and jewelry.
This is only one way of thousands to dress in the Goth fashion. Because it’s all about individuality, you will find that no two Goths dress alike.
