New England Clambake: A Tasty Celebration

By | October 26, 2009

A New England clambake is a fun and exciting time for the whole family. These get togethers were usually held outside up and down the coast, with most even held right on the beach. Now, however, friends and families are having them right in their backyards or even in a park.

Celebrations typically foster upbeat and happy moods. They allow for socializing and enjoying the presence of the people around you. Clam bakes are great for the holiday season, and are terrific option for many different types of celebrations, including New Year’s, Hanukkah, and Christmas.

The food at clambakes traditionally includes a variety of meats with the majority being seafood. A large pit is dug for steaming clams, lobster, scallops, and oysters. Other items in the feast might include sausage, corn, potatoes, carrots, celery and onions. Often friends and family members attending the clambake bring food items to contribute to the feast.

To make a cooking pit, a hole is first dug in the sand. Then hot stones or coals are laid on the bottom. The coals are covered with layer of wet seaweed. Some cooks prefer to cook on a metal grill which is laid on the seaweed, and others use the seaweed for a base. Food is added to the pit on top of the prepared base, and the food remains in the hole until it is steamed

Different regions offer slight varying versions of the New England clambake. Many of those differences revolve around the actual type of seafood served. Each region boasts its own seafood specialty. While some clam bakes exclusively offer clams and lobsters, other areas have mussels and quahogs.

If you are thinking about a clam bake, remember that most communities require authorization for use of public lands. Beaches typically have some cut off time for gatherings, which must be obeyed unless other arrangements have been made. Similarly, many places strictly limit open fires. Worst case scenario, everything must be cooked elsewhere leaving only the set up to occur at the site.

Getting a professional will eliminate most of these difficulties. They can deal with the local government, and get permission. They can purchase whatever is necessary, prepare and set up everything. All you need to do is determine who you wish to be there! If you choose to go all out, professionals can include drinks both alcoholic and non at extra cost.

In the end, a New England clambake might be the perfect way to celebrate the holidays. For many families, it is already a holiday tradition. If you’ve never experienced one, you might find that it becomes your family’s newest way to celebrate any momentous occasion.

A New England Clambake is a festive occasion and it is usually held outdoors. It is traditionally held on the beach. A clam bake is great for the holiday season.
