Fireplace Designs Gone Wrong

By | January 11, 2010

It was difficult to choose from the many fireplace designs for my family’s new home. My husband wanted something rugged looking, like brick. I wanted something elegant and classic. I could just picture what it would look like with my bows and greenery for the holidays.

It was after a lot of arguing, hair pulling, and a knocked-out tooth before we finally chose the design that was just right. Now, to avoid the same mistakes we made, here are some things you’ll want to consider BEFORE you decide on a design.

Budget:

Determining a budget for your fireplace is very important. You’ll then be looking at all the fireplace designs that fit in your budget. Although we finally decided on something quite amazing that we both loved, it was a result of looking at designs that ended up being outside of our budget. Keeping with your budget should be your first priority.

Placement:

You also need to consider the way your house is built, because not all fireplace designs will work. We didn’t think about this before we started shopping for fireplaces. Even though we saw a number of them that we really liked, it wasn’t possible to use them. They weren’t going to fit properly in the space we had decided the fireplace would go. While beauty is an important feature, the size and shape still needs to be taken into consideration.

Use:

Do you want a real fireplace that you’ll actually use, or is it just for show? If you will not be using the fireplace, there are many fireplace designs that you are able to go with. But if you’re going to use it, then you’ll want to consider the materials that will be used, the shape, and of course how safe the fireplace will be.

Choosing the perfect design may get frustrating for you, but if you follow these tips, it should be a piece of cake!
